Steps

1. Count the digits. More digits → a greater whole number.
2. Line up the ones in a place-value chart.
3. Start on the left, the greatest place.
4. First different digit wins. Write <, > or =: 45,312 > 45,231.
5. Rhyme: “Line up the places, start on the left. The first different digit decides the rest!”
