Grade 4 Multiplication

Multiply by Multiples of 10, 100 & 1,000

Steps

  1. Find the basic fact. 3 × 200 → 3 × 2 = 6.
  2. Tack the zeros back. 200 has two zeros, so 3 × 200 = 600.
  3. Watch the trap! 2 × 500: 2 × 5 = 10, add two zeros → 1,000 (three zeros).
  4. Words: factor (a number you multiply), product (the answer), multiple of 10 (10, 20, 30 …).
  5. Rhyme: “Multiply the basic fact, then tack the zeros back!”
