Grade 5 Decimal Place Value
Decimal Place Value Explained
Steps
- The chart: tens · ones · point · tenths · hundredths · thousandths.
- Tens or tenths? Places right of the point end in -ths: they are parts of one.
- Count from the point: 1st tenths, 2nd hundredths, 3rd thousandths.
- Digit vs value: in 3.425 the 2 is in the hundredths place, value 0.02.
- The 10× rule: 0.4 is 10 times 0.04.
- Expanded form: 3.42 = 3 + 0.4 + 0.02 = 3 + 4/10 + 2/100 = 3×1 + 4×(1/10) + 2×(1/100).
- Read it: say and for the point, then the last place: three and forty-two hundredths.
- Fractions: 43/100 = 0.43 · 9/1000 = 0.009.
