Grade 5 Comparing Decimals

Comparing Decimals: Equivalent Zeros

Steps

  1. Line up the decimal points.
  2. Add equivalent zeros at the end: 0.6 → 0.60. End zeros don't change the value; a middle zero does (0.7 ≠ 0.07).
  3. Start on the left, the greatest place.
  4. First different digit wins: 0.60 > 0.58, so 0.6 > 0.58. Longer does not mean bigger!
  5. Rhyme: “Line up the points, add zeros to the end. Start on the left: the first different digit wins, my friend!”
